Piloting the UpSpace learning experience - empowering students for a greener future

12.05.2026.

The piloting phase of the UpSpace platform has represented a key step in introducing innovative, sustainability-focused education into schools. During this stage, students tested the platform and its learning materials in real classroom settings, contributing to the refinement and improvement of the overall experience.

Designed for lower and upper secondary school students aged 12–16, the platform was structured around a future-oriented curriculum combining digital learning with hands-on activities. The curriculum successfully blended classroom-based instruction with digital platform activities, enabling students to learn both independently and collaboratively. Through engaging modules, students explored circular economy principles, upcycling practices, and environmental responsibility, effectively connecting theory with real-world challenges.

Students played an active role throughout the piloting phase. They participated in collaborative projects, experimented with creative solutions, and provided valuable feedback on the platform’s usability and content. This approach fostered critical thinking, teamwork, and the development of key “green skills”, while also strengthening environmental awareness and encouraging more sustainable behaviours. Teachers supported the process using structured materials and training, while schools served as testing environments for innovative teaching methods. Collaboration across countries further encouraged the exchange of ideas and best practices.

The piloting phase was implemented across a network of European partner schools, which played a central role in testing and validating the UpSpace curriculum and platform. These included:

  • IIS Duca-Abruzzi-Einaudi Pareto (Italy)
  • Mihailo Petrović Alas School (Serbia)
  • 5th Gymnasium of Thessaloniki (Greece)
  • Förderverein RUZ Reinhausen e.V. (Germany)

These schools actively engaged students in piloting activities, including workshops, labs, and classroom experimentation. Their contribution ensured that the learning materials were practical, inclusive, and adaptable to different educational contexts across Europe.

At the end of the piloting phase, students provided feedback through structured questionnaires, which indicated high levels of satisfaction. Their responses were particularly positive regarding increased environmental awareness and the value of both blended and in-person activities. Importantly, the feedback also enabled the consortium partners to identify and implement necessary improvements to the resource.

As a result, the resource has been further optimized for dissemination beyond the consortium, supporting its use by a wider network of schools and helping to spread environmental sustainability awareness among younger generations across Europe.

Overall, the piloting phase ensured that the UpSpace platform is effective, engaging, and adaptable. By directly involving students in a future-oriented learning pathway and testing it across diverse school environments, the project has promoted a participatory model of education and contributed to preparing young people to play an active role in building a more sustainable future.
